I'm not sure, but I think you're right. They did that so they wouldn't run the risk of the Narada seeing them.

That's pretty insane if you think about it.
You have to take the ship from warp whatever to a dead stop in microseconds. And when you shut the drive down you have to do it on a microsecond timing, otherwise you slam into the moon (or are too deep in the gravity well), or are far clear of the atmosphere.

But I guess it is Kirk's Enterprise, so insanity is the SOP
